In October 2021, a significant milestone in food allergy safety was achieved in the UK with the implementation of Natasha’s Law. This law mandates clearer food labelling to protect those with allergies, a victory that stemmed from a heartbreaking tragedy. This blog explores Natasha’s Law, the campaign that led to its creation, and how you can join the effort to ensure safer dining experiences for everyone.

What is Natasha’s Law?

Natasha’s Law was introduced in memory of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, a 15-year-old who tragically passed away in 2016 after consuming a sandwich that contained sesame seeds – an allergen that was not listed on the packaging. The law now requires all food businesses to provide full ingredient lists and allergen labelling on pre-packaged foods made on-site, such as sandwiches, salads, and bakery items.

The Campaign for Change

Natasha’s parents, Nadim and Tanya Ednan-Laperouse, spearheaded a campaign to change food labeling laws in the UK to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. Their relentless advocacy, supported by various food safety organizations and the public, led to the enactment of Natasha’s Law.

Key Requirements of Natasha’s Law

  • Full Ingredient List: All pre-packaged foods must have a complete list of ingredients.
  • Allergen Highlighting: Any of the 14 major allergens present in the food must be clearly highlighted in the ingredients list.

Impact on Consumers and Businesses

For consumers, especially those with food allergies, Natasha’s Law provides much-needed transparency and safety when purchasing food. For businesses, it represents a commitment to the health and well-being of their customers, requiring them to adapt their labelling practices to comply with the new regulations.
